What Thinking, Fast and Slow is about

What's in it for me? Meet the two minds making your decisions.
Quick: a bat and a ball cost $1.10 together. The bat costs one dollar more than the ball. How much is the ball?
If "ten cents" jumped into your head, you're in excellent company. It's also wrong. Hold that thought.
Daniel Kahneman spent more than half a century catching the human mind in the act of fooling itself. Working with his friend and partner Amos Tversky, he showed that our errors in judgment aren't random. They follow patterns, and the patterns can be mapped. That work earned Kahneman the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002, a rare honor for a psychologist.
Thinking, Fast and Slow is the map. It explains why a random number can change your guess about world politics, why a flight instructor can learn exactly the wrong lesson from his own students, why a team of experts can miss a deadline by six years, and why you might choose more pain over less.
In this read, you'll find out:
- who is really in charge when you make a decision;
- why your mind would rather answer an easier question than the one in front of it;
- how losses, plans and memories bend your choices without asking.
None of it will make you immune. But you'll start to notice the moments when your mind is about to take a shortcut, and those are the moments that cost the most.
So, about that ball. Why does the wrong answer arrive so fast, and feel so right?
