What The Courage to Be Disliked is about

What's in it for me? Learn why the past has less power over you than you think.
A young man knocks on the door of a philosopher's study, already angry. He has heard what this old man teaches: the world is simple, people can change, and anyone can be happy, starting today. The young man thinks that's nonsense. He has spent his life feeling second-rate, held back by his upbringing, his looks and his nerves. He plans to tear the theory apart and walk out the winner.
He doesn't. Instead, he keeps coming back, night after night, and the argument that follows makes up this book.
The Courage to Be Disliked, by the Japanese philosopher Ichiro Kishimi and the writer Fumitake Koga, first came out in Japan in 2013. It's written as a dialogue, the way Plato wrote about Socrates, and it teaches the ideas of Alfred Adler. Adler worked in Vienna at the same time as Freud and Jung, but while their names became famous, his ideas quietly spread into half the self-help shelf without his name attached.
His message is blunt. You aren't a prisoner of what happened to you. Most of your pain comes from other people, or from how you deal with them. And real freedom has a price: some people won't like you.
In the next few minutes, you'll see why your emotions might be working for you rather than against you, how one simple question ends most arguments over whose problem is whose, and why living like a dancer beats living like a hiker racing to a summit.
So where does it start? With the boldest claim of all: trauma doesn't decide your life.
