What The Anxious Generation is about
Why did anxiety and depression among teens surge in the early 2010s? Jonathan Haidt traces it to the swap of a play-based childhood for a phone-based one, and lays out four simple rules that families, schools and governments can use to give kids their childhood back.

What's in it for me? Find out what really happened to childhood, and how to bring it back.
Imagine a billionaire knocks on your door. He's building the first permanent settlement on Mars, and he wants your ten-year-old to go. Children, he explains, adapt to the new world far better than adults do.
You'd have questions. What does radiation do to a body that's still growing? What does low gravity do to bones and muscles? Could your child ever come back to Earth? Nobody can tell you. You'd slam the door.
Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist at New York University, argues that we said yes to something just as untested. In the early 2010s, tech companies moved childhood onto a new planet: the smartphone, loaded with social media. No one ran safety trials. No one asked parents. And within a few years, the mental health of teenagers in many countries collapsed.
His diagnosis has two halves. We've overprotected children in the real world, where they need freedom and risk, and underprotected them in the virtual world, where they need it least. The result is what he calls the Great Rewiring of childhood.
In this read, you'll learn why kids need scraped knees, why social media hits girls and boys in different ways, what a phone quietly takes away from all of us, and the four simple rules Haidt thinks could end the trap.
First, though, the evidence. What exactly went wrong, and when?
