A student at New York University starts a record label with a friend. A decade later, he's recording Johnny Cash, a fading legend, with little more than his voice and a guitar. The albums bring Cash back to life. Between those two moments sit Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, Slayer and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and later Jay-Z and Adele.
That's Rick Rubin, co-founder of Def Jam and one of the most sought-after producers alive. You'd expect his book to be a list of studio tricks. It isn't. Rubin says he set out to write about how to make great art, and the book turned into one about how to be.
The Creative Act is 78 short meditations rather than numbered chapters, closer to a book of reflections than a manual. Here you'll find its central ideas, pulled into a clear path you can follow: where ideas really come from, how to notice more of them, what gets in the way, and the four phases that carry a spark into a finished piece.
You don't need to be a musician, a painter or a writer. Rubin's first claim is that you're already an artist, whether you make anything or not.
So what does an artist actually do all day, if it isn't making things?
