What Sapiens is about

How did one unremarkable ape come to rule the Earth? Harari follows our species from the Stone Age to the lab, showing how shared stories built farms, money, empires and science, and asks whether all that power has made us any happier.

What's in it for me? See the strange story of how you came to rule the world.

Picture the planet 100,000 years ago. At least six different kinds of humans walk the Earth. Some are stocky and built for the cold. Some are tiny islanders. One of them, a slender ape in East Africa, is nothing special. It eats what it can find, runs from bigger predators, and leaves barely more mark on the world than a troop of gorillas.

Today, only one of those humans is left. It's you.

In Sapiens, historian Yuval Noah Harari tells the story of how that unremarkable ape took over the world. He tells it through three great turning points. About 70,000 years ago, a change in how we think let us cooperate like no animal before us. About 12,000 years ago, we started farming. And about 500 years ago, we started doing science.

Each turn made us more powerful. But Harari keeps asking an awkward question that most history books skip: did any of it make us happier?

In the pages ahead, you'll learn why a car company and a Stone Age statue have more in common than you'd think, why wheat may have tamed you rather than the other way round, why money is the most successful story ever told, and why admitting "we don't know" turned out to be one of the most powerful things Europeans ever said.

But first, the big mystery. Neanderthals had bigger brains than we did and were tougher in a fight. So how did the weaker species win?
