What's in it for me? Learn to build what doesn't exist yet.

Here's a question that ruins job interviews: what important truth do very few people agree with you on?

Try it. It's harder than it sounds. Most answers turn out to be things plenty of people already believe, dressed up to sound bold. A real answer takes two things that rarely go together: original thinking, and the nerve to say it out loud.

Peter Thiel asks it of almost everyone he might hire. He co-founded PayPal, made the first outside investment in Facebook and co-founded the data company Palantir. In 2012 he taught a class on startups at Stanford, and one of his students, Blake Masters, took notes so good that they spread across the tech world. Those notes became this book.

Its argument is simple to state and hard to live by. There are two ways to move the world forward. You can copy what already works, taking things from 1 to n. Or you can make something genuinely new, taking them from 0 to 1. Copying is easier, but only the new creates real value.

The catch: there's no formula for doing something new, because any formula is by definition something old. What Thiel offers instead is a way of thinking, one that questions what everyone takes for granted.

So where do you start? With a belief almost every businessperson holds, and that Thiel thinks is wrong.
