What's in it for me? Negotiate like your life depends on it.
"We've got your son. One million dollars, or he dies."
The man saying it is Robert Mnookin, a Harvard law professor and one of the biggest names in conflict resolution. Beside him sits Gabriella Blum, who spent eight years as a negotiator for Israel's National Security Council and army. A tape recorder is running. It's a role-play, sprung on a visiting FBI agent over what was supposed to be coffee. But the pressure in the room is real.
The agent is Chris Voss, at the time the FBI's lead international kidnapping negotiator. He doesn't argue. He doesn't bargain. He smiles and asks one question: how is he supposed to do that? Then he asks how he can know his son is even alive. Every threat gets a question back. Blum takes over and gets the same questions. Before long, the professor is red in the face and out of moves. He admits the FBI might have something to teach Harvard.
Voss started as a beat cop in Kansas City and spent 24 years in the FBI, talking to bank robbers, fugitives and terrorists. His big discovery is that negotiation isn't a contest of logic. It's a game of emotions, and you can learn to play it. Kidnappers, in his view, are really just businessmen chasing the best price, which means the same tools work on your landlord, your boss and your teenager.
So why did Harvard's sharpest minds keep losing to a cop who just asked questions?
