Blood on a Stranger's Shirt

The man in front of me at the crosswalk is reading his phone when the truck takes him. There's a sound I will hear for the rest of my life, and then something warm across my cheek, my neck, the front of my blouse.

For a moment the whole street freezes. Then Manhattan starts moving again, around him, around me.

I can't feel my hands. Somebody is holding my elbow and steering me through a door, into a coffee shop, into a restroom that smells of bleach. He's tall, calm, with tired eyes. He wets paper towels and works at my skin. When it's clear the blouse is ruined, he unbuttons his own shirt, he has a T-shirt underneath, and hands it to me.

"You're in shock," he says. "It's normal. Give it a minute."

"I watched him die."

"I know." He leans against the sink. "I lost my daughter five months ago. She was eight. It doesn't land right away. Then it does."

I tell him my mother died last week. Cancer. I spent months feeding her, turning her, listening to her breathe. I don't know why I tell a stranger that. Maybe because he looks like a man who understands what it costs to sit beside someone who's leaving.

I notice his wedding ring. He notices me noticing. Then he's gone, and I'm standing in a borrowed shirt, late for the most important meeting I've had in years.

I need this meeting. There's an eviction notice taped to my door and almost nothing in my account. My agent, Corey, who for a while was also more than my agent, wouldn't say much on the phone. Only that Pantem Press had asked for me by name.

I step into the elevator buttoned into a stranger's shirt, and a hand stops the doors from closing.

It's him. He reaches for the panel, sees which floor is already lit, and lowers his hand.

We ride up side by side in silence, both of us doing the same math.
