The hottest day of the year
From the diary of Alicia Berenson: The heat won't break. London smells of hot tar and cut grass, and I can't paint for more than an hour without the brush slipping in my hand. Gabriel came home tonight, took one look at me and laughed, and I thought: I love him so much it frightens me. I'm writing this down so I'll remember I was happy.
A few weeks later, she killed him.
Alicia Berenson was thirty-three. Gabriel was forty-four, a fashion photographer with a famous eye. They had been married seven years and lived in a tall house on the edge of Hampstead Heath, where Alicia worked in a summerhouse at the bottom of the garden that she had turned into a studio.
On the twenty-fifth of August, the hottest day of that whole sweltering summer, a car brought Gabriel home from a shoot at eleven at night. Half an hour later, their neighbour Barbie Hellmann heard gunshots and called the police. They found Gabriel tied to a chair, shot in the face. Alicia stood near him, covered in his blood, her wrists cut open.
She survived. She never spoke again.
Not to the police, not to her lawyers, not to the judge. The only thing she said, she said in paint: a self-portrait made while she waited for trial, naked in her studio, a brush in her hand dripping red. She called it Alcestis, after the Greek wife who dies in her husband's place. Nobody could tell me what it meant. Her gallerist, Jean-Felix Martin, hung it in his Soho gallery while the trial was still going on, and people queued down the street to stare at it.
The court accepted a plea of diminished responsibility. She was sent to the Grove, a secure forensic unit in north London, under the care of its director, Professor Lazarus Diomedes.
I was working as a psychotherapist at Broadmoor. I read every word written about her. I believed her silence was a wound, and that wounds can be opened and cleaned.
Six years after she went in, a job came up at the Grove.
I applied the same day.
