The rain came down so hard that the park I'd been shooting in disappeared behind a grey wall.

I stood under a dripping tree with my camera stuffed inside my jacket and refreshed the ride app for the ninth time. No cars. No cabs. My phone had eleven percent battery and my brother's farewell party started in two hours.

So I called Josh.

"Stay where you are," he said. "I'm sending someone."

I knew who before the black car even turned the corner. There was only one person Josh trusted enough to send, and only one person in the world who could make a car look disapproving.

Alex Volkov leaned across and pushed the passenger door open. He didn't smile. Alex never smiled. He had the face of a statue in a museum and the warmth of one too.

"Get in, Ava."

I dripped all over his leather seats. He didn't mention it, which was somehow worse.

"You're out here alone," he said, eyes on the road. "With no backup plan."

"I had a plan. The plan was a taxi."

"That's not a plan. That's a hope."

I'd known Alex for years, ever since he and Josh became inseparable, and in all that time he'd said maybe a hundred words to me. I'd decided long ago that there was nothing under the ice. Just more ice.

That night, at the party, Josh pulled me into the hallway. My big brother was leaving for a whole year abroad, and he looked more nervous about it than I did.

"Liam's still texting you, isn't he?"

My ex. The one who'd cheated, and then, when I ended it, decided I didn't get to end it. Lately he'd been showing up places. Waiting.

"I can handle Liam."

"I know. But I asked Alex to keep an eye on you while I'm gone." Josh held up a hand before I could argue. "He's moving into my place."

My brother's place was next door to mine.

"Josh. He doesn't even like me."

"Exactly," my brother said, grinning. "That's why he's perfect."
