The Wrong Hallway at the Wrong Hour

Three years earlier, on the day of her interview, Olive Smith's eyes were on fire.

She had put in a pair of contact lenses that were far past their date, and by noon the whole Stanford biology building had gone soft and blurry. She found a bathroom, leaned over the sink and splashed water into her eyes until they stopped stinging. Someone else was in there. A tall shape, a deep voice, a man who asked, not unkindly, whether she was all right.

She couldn't see his face. She assumed he was a student. So she told him the truth, the way you only tell strangers: that she wanted to come here, that she wanted to find a way to catch a certain cancer before it was too late, and that she wasn't sure she was good enough.

He told her that wanting it for a real reason was the best reason there was. Then he left, and she never learned his name.

Weeks later the acceptance letter arrived, and she came to Stanford, still thinking now and then about a voice she couldn't put a face to.

Now she was twenty-six, three years into her PhD, and standing in a dark corridor of the same building at nearly midnight, watching her best friend walk toward her.

Anh Pham was the kind of friend who would cross a campus at night to bring you snacks. She was also, Olive knew, quietly crazy about Jeremy, a guy from the department Olive had gone on exactly one date with. Anh would never act on it. Not while she thought Olive might still be hurt.

So Olive had lied. She'd said she was seeing someone. Someone new, someone serious, someone Anh had never met.

And Anh was getting closer, and the corridor was empty except for one man coming the other way.

Olive didn't think. She stepped in front of him, put her hands on his shoulders, rose onto her toes and kissed him.

He went completely still. When she pulled back, her face burning, she finally looked up.

Adam Carlsen.

Thirty-four years old, a star of the department, and famous for one thing above all: making graduate students cry.
