What Deep Work is about
Why does a day of email and meetings leave so little to show for it? Cal Newport argues that long, undistracted focus is the skill that matters most now, and gives you practical rules for building it into your work and your life.

In the 1920s, the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung began building a stone tower in the woods by a lake near the village of Bollingen. He already had a busy clinical practice in Zurich. But when he wanted to do the thinking that would change his field, he went to the tower, closed the door and worked without interruption.
Now picture your own last workday. How many times did you check your email? How long did you spend on one hard problem before something pinged?
Cal Newport, a computer science professor at Georgetown University, has a name for what Jung was doing: deep work. It means working on a demanding task in full concentration, with no distractions, pushing your mind as far as it can go. Its opposite is shallow work: replying, scheduling, attending, forwarding. Shallow work keeps things running, but almost anyone could do it, and it rarely creates anything new.
Newport's bet is simple. The ability to work deeply is becoming rarer at exactly the moment it's becoming more valuable. So the few people who build it will pull ahead.
In this read, you'll find out why focus pays so well, why modern offices make it so hard, and the concrete rules Newport uses to protect it, from choosing your own deep work routine to quitting the apps that eat your attention.
First, though: why should focus be worth more today than it was twenty years ago?
