The Boy Beneath the Tower
The body lay in the mud at the foot of the old fire tower, face up, one leg bent the wrong way. It was the morning of October 30, 1969, and two boys riding their bikes through the marsh saw the blue of a denim jacket from the stairs and stopped breathing for a moment.
It was Chase Andrews. Everyone in Barkley Cove knew Chase Andrews.
But the story starts long before that, in 1952, on a sagging porch at the edge of the marsh.
Kya was six. She stood barefoot on the warped boards and watched her mother walk down the sand lane in her good shoes, a blue suitcase swinging from one hand. Ma always turned at the end of the lane to wave. Kya waited for it, holding the screen door open so long it creaked.
Ma didn't turn. The palmettos closed behind her, and the lane was empty.
"She'll be back by supper," said Jodie, her brother, the closest to her in age. He sat on the steps and didn't look at her. "Give it time."
But the older ones knew better. By the end of the month her sisters were gone, then her brother Murph, slipping off into a world Kya had never seen. Pa came home drunk and loud and swung at whoever was nearest. One night he carried Ma's paintings and her dresses out to the yard and set them alight, and Kya watched the colors she loved curl and blacken.
Jodie lasted longest. One morning he stood in the doorway with a knapsack.
"Kya, listen. If he comes for you, don't hide in the shack. Get into the grass, deep, where nobody can follow. Out where the crawdads sing, like Ma said."
He touched her hair. "I gotta go. I can't stay with him no more."
She didn't beg. She had already learned that begging didn't work. She stood in the yard and watched him go the way Ma had gone, and when the lane was empty again, she turned and went inside, because someone had to cook supper for Pa.
There was no one else left.
