Thursday at the Gallery
Danika Fendyr came to the gallery on Thursdays, and only on Thursdays, and she never knocked.
Bryce Quinlan heard the front door's wards hiss and didn't bother looking up from the catalogue on her desk. Griffin Antiquities was quiet that afternoon: old marble, older silence, and a library below where things that should have been in museums slept behind glass. Her boss, Jesiba Roga, was a sorceress who liked to remind her that the cameras never blinked.
"They're letting Briggs out," Danika said, dropping into the client chair. "A technicality. My pack caught that man, and some lawyer found a comma in the wrong place."
Philip Briggs had wanted humans to rise against the Vanir who ruled them. Half-human Bryce understood the anger. She did not understand the bombs.
"So what are you going to do?"
"Yell at the City Heads." Danika slid a sword across the desk, an old blade in a worn scabbard. "Keep this for me? I can't walk into a council meeting armed."
"Since when do you follow rules?"
"Since my mother started counting."
It was easy with Danika. It always had been. The wolf was heir to the most powerful wolf family in Crescent City, and her mother, Sabine, made it known daily that her daughter's best friend was a half-breed party girl. Danika had never cared.
That evening the Pack of Devils sprawled across their apartment, loud and warm, and Connor Holstrom, Danika's second, caught Bryce at the door. He wanted a real date. Bryce told him no, the way she always did, and went out to meet her boyfriend, Reid, who was duller and safer.
Before she left, Danika said it plainly from the couch, without a joke attached: she loved her.
"Love you too," Bryce said, and went out into the night.
Reid was late, and that was the end of Reid. On the street she texted Connor: fine, one date. Then she went to the White Raven with her friends and danced until her feet ached. When she climbed the stairs home in the small hours, the door to the apartment stood open, and the smell coming out of it was copper.
